So, you’re aspiring to get to the top position? You clearly have the ambition. But, do you have what else it takes? The team at CV Knowhow are here to share some tips and insight on how to become a CEO and what you need to make it as one.

Education

Most CEOs in big business have at least a Bachelor’s degree, which is usually (though not always) in a business-related discipline.
It’s increasingly common these days for them to also have an MBA from a leading business school, completed when they have a few years of management experience under their belt.

Mentoring

To get to the top, senior executives will often find a business mentor to guide them through challenges and advise on career progression.
It’s important, therefore, to be able to respond to feedback and act on constructive criticism. Later in their career, executives will often repay this by mentoring someone themselves.

Outstanding communication skills

CEOs need to demonstrate exceptional communication skills. Not just writing basic reports and running meetings, but higher-level skills including effective negotiation and influencing, as well as delivering presentations to large audiences.
There is also considerable benefit in building a strong network throughout your career. Make connections with people in real life and also on LinkedIn, so that you stay abreast of industry news and find out about new opportunities at an early stage.

Hard work

There are no short-cuts to the top. Any CEO in a leading business will have extensive operational experience, with exposure to diverse business functions.
They’ll have built a reputation for sound commercial and financial acumen and are likely to have a global perspective gained by working with, or in, countries around the globe.
If you want to become a CEO, you need to put in the time and do the groundwork.

Professional success

To prove you’re ready to become a CEO, you’ll need to have a strong record of achievement under your belt. This is likely to include developing and leading the implementation of successful business strategies, which enable organisations to achieve their objectives.
You need to be delivering measurable, impactful results throughout your career, so that when you’re in a position to become a CEO, you can prove you’re up to the job.
